Programs on Parade - Staff Led Fun!

These are fun and adventurous skill development workshops led by program volunteers or staff to increase girls' skills in outdoor adventures.

    Which of the following Programs on Parade would girls in your troop or service unit like to explore? Contact the designated staff person, at least six weeks prior to earliest possible date, to schedule one of the following Programs on Parade with your girls.

    The troop/service unit provides supervising adults within age appropriate ratio. Activities of some Programs can accommodate many Girl Scouts, some are limited by activity or equipment. Each is offered at a fee of $8 per Girl Scout. Non-Girl Scouts wishing to participate, pay an additional $10 registration fee.

Leave No Trace
Text Box:  When participating in any outdoor activity, we must be sure to do everything within our power to preserve and protect the places where we play.  This two-hour workshop on ethics and stewardship is a must for Girl Scouts of all ages as they prepare for camping and outdoor adventure activities.

Climate Calamity
Text Box:  Melting glaciers, snow in July, floods, droughts, tornados, and hurricanes galore!  What’s going on out there!?  In this 90-minute session, learn the facts about global climate change and discover what each of us can do to help.

Treasure Hunter
Text Box:  Have you heard about “Geocaching”?  This is where small “caches” are hidden and by using a Global Positioning Unit you go on a treasure hunt to find them.  Your troop will learn the basics of GPS and the game is on!  Maximum of 12  girls.

Finding Your Way
Text Box:  Learn how to navigate with a map or compass.  This program can be presented with a choice of options: Finding Your Way with Map or Compass or Map and Compass.  It’s a great way to prepare to participate in an Orienteering Meet.  Maximum of 20 girls.

Archery Fun
Text Box:  Learn the basics of safety and try for a bull’s eye.  Play games or experienced archers can
compete in a tournament. Maximum of 12 girls.

Paddle Prep
Text Box:  They tip, they roll, they slice through the water with speed and ease.  The kayaking craze is on!  Get a handle on the basics prior to your paddling excursion. Sessions offered at Comstock Program Center after school or on weekends, June through September.  A maximum of 7 girls can be accommodated per session.  Participants need to be at least 5 feet tall and 100 pounds.

2-hour Intro & Safety Session:  Take a swim test, get to know the equipment, learn proper paddle handling, equipment care, rules for staying safe, and what to do when you tip.  This session is a prerequisite for the Practice Session.
Grades 8-12
2-hour Practice Session:  Receive instruction on basic rescue skills including self-arrest and assisted-arrest, learn the different paddling strokes, and spend some time out on the water putting it all into action.
